Crossbow provides the building blocks for network virtualization and resource control by virtualizing the stack and NIC around any service (HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, NFS, etc.), protocol or Virtual machine.

Each virtual stack can be assigned its own priority and bandwidth on a shared NIC without causing any performance degradation. The architecture dynamically manages priority and bandwidth resources, and can provide better defense against denial-of-service attacks directed at a particular service or virtual machine by isolating the impact just to that entity. The virtual stacks are separated by means of H/W classification engine such that traffic for one stack does not impact other virtual stacks.

Project Crossbow is next step in the evolution of Solaris networking stack and brings bandwidth resource control and virtualization as part of the architecture itself instead of the usual add-on layers which have heavy overheads and complexity.

Functional Components
The Crossbow architecture consists of the following major components: Virtual NICs (VNICs), network resource control using the network stack squeues, and hardware support for flow classification. These components and their interaction are represented by the following figure:

Virtual NICs

A single physical NIC can be carved up into multiple VNICs, which can be assigned to different zones or Xen instances running on the same system. VNICs are managed using the dladm(1M) command line utility which was introduced by the Nemo project. The NIC hardware classifier steers inbound traffic to the hardware receive rings that are associated with the VNICs.

Flow Management

Crossbow creates the concept of a flow, which comprises a class of traffic and a handling policy (bandwidth limit, priority, etc.) A flow, for example, can correspond to a particular protocol, service, or virtual machine. The squeues that were introduced in Solaris 10 as part of FireEngine are extended to control the resources used by flows. This is done by replacing the interrupt-driven packet processing by a polling mechanism where the squeue fetches packets from the hardware.
Hardware Support for Flow Processing
Modern NIC hardware provides capabilities that allow network traffic to be classified according to packet contents such as IP addresses, MAC addresses, upper layer protocols port numbers, etc. This classification allows us to steer incoming network traffic to different hardware receive rings (aka DMA channels, FIFOs). These receive rings are then associated with flows, which correspond to services or virtual machines, and are controlled by squeues.
Administration Model
dladm(1M) is extended to configure VNICs in a manner very similar to current link devices (create, destroy, modify, show). flowadm(1M) is provided to configure flows (create, destroy, modify, show). Each flow is affiliated with exactly one VNIC. Each VNIC has one flow when it is created. One of our major goals is to make the administration of VNICs, flows, and resource usage polices as seamless as possible. When possible, these operations will be tightly integrated with the zone administration tools.

Review Sun has made good on its promise to deliver OpenSolaris, the company’s Unix-based answer to Linux, with a company-supported, commercial update arriving in mid-May. Although far from a complete product, the latest OpenSolaris is impressive and in the long run could prove a viable alternative to Linux.

Part of OpenSolaris’ appeal is that it contains a subset of the source code for the Solaris Operating System, but with an open source license. Among the familiar Sun features are the enviable DTrace tuning and monitoring tool and the ever-impressive ZFS filesystem, neither of which are likely to make it to Linux due to licensing and personality conflicts.

On the other hand, larger Linux efforts like Debian (which is the basis of Ubuntu) have an impressive range of open source software packages which, so far, OpenSolaris can’t match.

However, given that OpenSolaris can potentially expand its package support far more easily than Linux can start shipping a DTrace equivalent, OpenSolaris may prove a powerful competitor in the years to come.

As it stands we wouldn’t recommend OpenSolaris to the casual user; there’s enough gotchas and quirks to make running OpenSolaris a bit more of a headache than Linux (of course that largely depends on your hardware).

Still, given that much of OpenSolaris’ potential audience are developers interested in its underlying tools like Dtrace or “containers,” we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it for advanced users. Just beware that the hardware driver support is nowhere near that of Linux rivals.

• Battery indikator tidak hanya menunjukan posisi 99% & kondisi laptop menggunakan battrey atau power line.

Problem sound, solusi sementara untuk problem sound: OpenSound oss-solaris-v4.0-1015-i386.pkg – . Tapi output sound yang dihasilkan masih terasa noise-nya. Mungkin ada pembaca lain yang sukses menggunakan driver lain dan menghasilkan hasil yang memuaskan, mohon komentar.

Sedangkan untuk problem wireless adapter masih belum ketemu untuk drivernya, atau mungkin saya yang katrok belum bisa setting wireless di Solaris. Untuk referensi saja berikut ini links yang mungkin dapat membantu setting wireless.

Sudah pernah coba solaris 10? Terlalu besar ya kalau di install di hard disk. Lebih dari 10gb! bahkan kalau kita install hanya console saja, bisa lebih dari 5gb. Bagaimana dengan LiveCD? sudah ada distronya tuh, Belenxi atau Nexenta.? Kalau RAM anda > 256mb and VGA compatible sih tidak masalah. Bagaimana kalau seperti saya, cmn punya Pentium 3, 933mhz, RAM 192. Hiks. . Sedihnya..

Coba searching2 di google ada dapet link Damn Small Solaris (DSS). Hey, is this a praticle joke? hanya guyonan dari damn small linux? Pertamanya sih kirain iya. Eh tahunya bener. Ada distro Open Solaris yang ukurannya hanya 60~70MB dan hanya butuh Memory hanya 192mb.

Selain bs di buat LiveCD , DSS jg bisa di jalankan melalui bootable business cards (cd ukuran kartu nama), USB flash drives, berbagai macam memory cards, dan Zip drives. Versi pertamanya adalah 0.1.1, keluar pd 21 february 2008 (5 hari sebelum tulisan ini!).

Software tidak begitu banyak, ada Beaver, Vim, Dillo, Midnight Commander, emelFM, XMMS, Xpdf, VNC viewer, Rdesktop, AxyFTP, Irssi. Selain dari software2 bawaan dari solaris itu sendiri, dtrace, zfs, brandz, dll. Seperti jg Belenix, DSS menggunakan lisensi CDDL license version 1. bisa download di sini :

Bung Admin, gw bikin post baru yah, soalnya gw belom ketemu posting
lama yang bahas masalah ini…

Gw udah install Sun Open Solaris Rilis 2/07. Dual boot dengan OS Windows XP.

Permasalahannya Grub gw hilang, setelah gw menggunakan Partition Magic
di Windows.

Gw coba install Boot manager baru, trus gw pilih booting option ke
“Primary Partition” ke dua yang berisi Open Solaris gw itu…

Tetapi yang muncul adalah console dari aplikasi GRUB tersebut.

Nah, gw mau tanya, untuk :
1.) Bisa booting ke Open Solaris kembali.
2.) Memunculkan kembali boot manager GRUB seperti sedia kala

Gw coba browsing-browsing, gw kebingungan, karena gw gak “native”
berbahasa inggris. Mungkin ada yang bisa bantu ?

Wah kayaknya pertanyaannya susah nih karena gak ada yg replay ato blom
ada yg punya pengalaman ini.

Solusi paling gampang sih install ulang opensolaris lagi, opensolaris
udah keluar versi yg lebih baru lagi karena kebetulan 2/07 berarti
udah setaun tuh.

Kalo mo ribet & mau belajar troubleshooting coba edit grub: Kira-kira
di grub-nya coba tambah ini:
